Before the helmets, the pyramid and the Grammys, Daft Punk were two Parisians making tracks in a bedroom studio and releasing them on a Scottish techno label. Homework, released in January 1997, gathered that early run into one long, loud, gloriously repetitive album, and it did more than any other record to make “French house” a phrase people outside Paris understood.

The current vinyl edition on Amazon is a Rhino UK double LP. The music is not in question here. The pressing, judging by buyer feedback, is a different matter. Here is what you get, what buyers report, and how to shop for it sensibly.

The music: a debut that still sounds like a manifesto

Homework is not polite. “Revolution 909” opens with the sound of a party being shut down before the kick drum barges back in. “Da Funk,” first released as a single on Glasgow’s Soma label in 1995, is a mid-tempo stomp with a squelching lead that sounds chewed and spat out. “Around the World” reduces a pop song to a bass line, a robot voice and pure repetition, and it is impossible to stop moving to.

The deeper cuts are where the album shows its roots. “Teachers” is a roll call of the Chicago and Detroit producers who inspired the duo, and the whole record treats American house and techno as a living language rather than a museum piece. “Rollin’ & Scratchin’” is noise-techno at its most abrasive, while “Fresh” offers a sunlit, seaside-sounding breather. “Burnin’” takes a looped funk riff and filters it until it glows.

It is a long album, around 74 minutes, and it is meant to be played loud. If you want the backstory, our feature on the history of the Homework album covers how it came together.

The pressing and packaging

The listing supports a few firm facts. This is a two-disc set from Rhino UK, the catalog label behind the current Daft Punk reissues, first available on Amazon in February 2022. Amazon also flags this edition as Climate Pledge Friendly, which is unusual for a vinyl listing; the listing does not spell out which certification applies.

As with the other Rhino Daft Punk reissues, the listing does not give a vinyl weight, a mastering credit or a pressing plant, so we will not speculate. Two discs for a 74-minute album is the right call regardless: cramming Homework onto one LP would mean narrow grooves and compromised bass, which is the last thing this record needs.

The sleeve carries the familiar Homework artwork: the embroidered Daft Punk logo patch on black satin. It is not a deluxe package, and the listing promises no inserts or extras.

What buyers say

Homework averages 4.6 out of 5 across more than 2,100 ratings, which is a strong score but noticeably below the 4.8 that Discovery and Alive 2007 earn on their Rhino listings. Amazon’s review summary explains the gap.

On the music, buyers are unanimous: they call the album incredible and a classic, with great sound quality and “pure listening joy.” On the physical record, the summary says pressing quality gets mixed feedback. Some buyers praise it; others report significant skipping that makes songs unlistenable. Opinions on overall quality and value for money are split the same way, with some finding it decent and others calling it a poor product.

That is a meaningful warning, but read it carefully. Mixed feedback on a widely sold pressing usually means variation between copies, not that every disc is bad. Many skips also come from turntable setup or dirt rather than the vinyl itself. The practical takeaway: buy it from a seller with easy returns, clean and play all four sides within the return window, and exchange a genuinely defective copy rather than living with it.

How it compares

Against Discovery, Homework is the more historically important album and the less immediately lovable one. Discovery also has the cleaner buyer record on pressing quality, which makes it the safer first purchase.

Against Alive 2007, Homework is the source material. The live album rebuilds “Da Funk,” “Around the World” and “Rollin’ & Scratchin’” into a continuous set; if you love those reworkings, the originals are worth having for how stark they sound.

Homework (Remixes) is a separate release and not a substitute for the album itself.

Who should buy it

Buy Homework if you are building a complete Daft Punk shelf, if you DJ or love raw 1990s house, or if you want to hear exactly where the duo’s sound started. Pair it with our guide to Daft Punk’s music gear for a sense of how those machines shaped the sound.

Skip it, for now, if you only want one Daft Punk LP or if returning a defective record sounds like more hassle than it is worth. The album will still be there when you are ready.

What we like

  • Includes ‘Da Funk’, ‘Around the World’, ‘Revolution 909’ and ‘Burnin”
  • Official Rhino UK reissue of the full album on two discs
  • Four sides suit a long, bass-heavy record better than a single LP would
  • Flagged as Climate Pledge Friendly on Amazon
  • Strong 4.6 average across more than 2,100 ratings

What could be better

  • Amazon’s review summary reports mixed pressing quality, including skipping
  • Some buyers question the value for money
  • The listing gives no vinyl weight or mastering details
  • Raw, repetitive tracks can be a hard sell for casual listeners

Frequently asked questions

Which songs are on Homework?

The album includes the singles ‘Da Funk’, ‘Around the World’, ‘Revolution 909’ and ‘Burnin”, plus fan favorites such as ‘Rollin’ & Scratchin”, ‘Phoenix’, ‘Fresh’ and ‘Teachers’.

What should I do if my copy skips?

First clean the record and check your setup: tracking force, anti-skate and a level platter cause many skips. If the same spot skips on a clean disc on a properly set-up turntable, it is likely a pressing defect, so request an exchange within the return window.

Is this the same as Homework (Remixes)?

No. Homework (Remixes) is a separate release of remixed tracks. This listing is the original 1997 album on two LPs.

Should I buy Homework or Discovery first?

For most people, Discovery. It is more melodic and its pressing gets cleaner buyer feedback. Homework is the better pick if you love raw house and techno or want to understand where the duo came from.

4.2/5

The verdict

Homework belongs in any serious Daft Punk collection, and this Rhino double LP is the easy official way to own it. The catch is consistency: buyer feedback on the pressing is genuinely mixed, so buy from a seller with easy returns and play every side soon after it arrives. If you want one Daft Punk record without the gamble, start with Discovery and come back for Homework second.
