In 2006 Daft Punk walked on stage at Coachella inside a giant illuminated pyramid and reset what an electronic live show could look like. The tour that followed reached Paris on June 14, 2007, at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, and that hometown show became Alive 2007, the album that won the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009.

It is a strange thing to buy on vinyl: a show built on lights and spectacle, reduced to grooves on two black discs. Yet it is one of the best-loved records in the Daft Punk catalog. Here is what the Rhino UK double LP offers and what buyers say about it.

4.5Our score

The definitive document of the pyramid tour, beloved by buyers for its mixing and energy, but a set that works best once you know the studio albums.

The music: a decade of Daft Punk, rebuilt live

Alive 2007 is not a run through the hits. It is a continuous set in which the duo stack, cut and collide songs from Homework, Discovery and Human After All, often two or three at once. The opening “Robot Rock / Oh Yeah” sets the template: a riff from one era slammed into a chant from another, building until the crowd noise becomes part of the arrangement.

The best moments are the collisions nobody would have predicted on paper. “Touch It / Technologic” pairs Busta Rhymes’ “Touch It”, which itself sampled “Technologic”, with the original, closing a loop between hip-hop and the duo’s robot pop. “Around the World / Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” lays two of their most famous loops on top of each other and somehow finds room for both. “One More Time / Aerodynamic” turns a festival anthem into a slow-building climax.

Because so much of the material comes from Human After All, the album also did something unusual: it rehabilitated a record many critics had dismissed in 2005. Heard through the pyramid’s lens, those blunt riffs suddenly made sense.

The pressing and packaging

The facts the listing supports are simple. This is a two-disc vinyl edition from Rhino UK, first available on Amazon in July 2022, with a stated run time of about 1 hour 13 minutes. The product description confirms the recording date, the venue and the 2009 Grammy.

The listing does not state a vinyl weight. An earlier Rhino/Parlophone edition, first listed in 2014, is described as 180-gram vinyl and was, according to its listing, the album’s first release on vinyl. Both are official; the newer listing simply has the larger rating base.

One honest drawback of the format: a set designed to run without a break has to stop three times on two LPs. If you want to hear Alive 2007 the way it was performed, a lossless stream is uninterrupted. The vinyl is for people who want the object and the ritual, and for many fans that is reason enough.

What buyers say

With more than 1,000 ratings averaging 4.8 out of 5, Alive 2007 matches Discovery as one of the best-rated Daft Punk records on Amazon. It also sits high in Amazon’s House chart.

Amazon’s summary of customer reviews leans heavily on the live experience. Buyers call it one of their favorite Daft Punk albums and the band’s best live performance, with special praise for the first two songs. The sound quality gets positive feedback, one buyer saying it achieves the maximum allowed sound range, and the mixing is highly regarded for its seamless transitions between tracks. Reviewers also mention the energetic feel and the audible reaction of the crowd, and describe the record as worth buying.

Two things are missing from that summary that matter for vinyl buyers: there is no recurring complaint about skips, warps or noisy surfaces. That compares favorably with the more mixed pressing feedback on the Homework reissue.

How it compares

Against the studio albums, Alive 2007 is a remix of your memories. If you do not yet know the songs, the thrill of hearing them collide is lost, which is why we rank Discovery as the better first purchase.

Against Alive 1997, the earlier live album, it is more ambitious and far better known. Alive 1997 is a single set from the Homework era, raw and fascinating, but it lacks the songbook that made the pyramid show so overwhelming.

If the helmets and the visual side of the pyramid era are what pull you in, our feature on the story of Daft Punk’s helmets is the right companion read.

Who should buy it

Buy Alive 2007 if you own at least one Daft Punk studio album, if you saw the duo live or wish you had, or if you want one record that captures their whole first decade at full volume. It is also a party record in the best sense; put on side one and the room changes.

Skip it as a first Daft Punk purchase, and skip it if you strongly prefer complete versions of songs to live edits.

What we like

  • Captures the Paris-Bercy show of June 14, 2007 from the Alive 2007 tour
  • Won the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009
  • Buyers single out the seamless mixing and the energy of the opening tracks
  • Rhino double LP with a strong 4.8 average across more than 1,000 ratings
  • Works as a career overview, drawing on Homework, Discovery and Human After All

What could be better

  • A continuous set loses some flow when split across four sides
  • Mashups and edits rather than full versions of the songs
  • The listing gives few pressing details beyond the disc count

Frequently asked questions

Where was Alive 2007 recorded?

At the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy arena in Paris on June 14, 2007, during the duo’s Alive 2007 world tour.

Is Alive 2007 a greatest hits album?

Not exactly. It is a continuous live set in which Daft Punk layer and mash up songs from their first three albums, such as ‘Around the World’ with ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’. You hear the hooks, but rarely a complete original version.

How many records are in the set?

Two LPs. The listing gives a run time of about 1 hour 13 minutes, spread across four sides.

What is the difference between the two Alive 2007 vinyl listings?

The 2014 Rhino/Parlophone listing is explicitly described as 180-gram vinyl; the 2022 Rhino UK listing does not state a weight. Both are official two-disc editions with very similar buyer ratings.

The verdict

Alive 2007 is the best live album Daft Punk made and one of the great electronic live records, full stop. On vinyl it is a little less seamless than on a continuous stream, because you flip sides mid-rave, but buyers love the mixing and the energy, and the Rhino pressing draws no recurring complaints. Own a studio album first, then make Alive 2007 your second Daft Punk record.
